Biography

BIRTHDATE:
Born on April 27th, 1976
Star Sign: Taurus

PROFILE:
Actress/Writer
The daughter of well-known authors & illustrators of children’s books, Jacqui & Colin Hawkins, Sally Hawkins was raised in Dulwich, south-east London where she attended James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS), graduating in 1994. She then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), graduating in 1998.

RANDOM QUOTES:
(Commenting on the directors of her 2 movies, “Layer Cake” and “Vera Drake“):

Matthew Vaughn was very caring, very attentive, which surprised me. I don’t know why - I had it in my head that he’d be some sort of lad.”

“You never get used to working with Mike Leigh. I was glad to become part of his company, though, because he tends to use you again and again. You have to be on your toes every second. This time I was improvising with Lesley Manville and Imelda Staunton, two total heroes to me.” (The Observer, 10/10/04)

ACTING CAREER:
Sally’s theatre appearances include “Much Ado of Nothing” (2000), “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (2000), “Misconceptions” (2001), “Country Music” (2004) & as “Adela” in David Hare’s version of Federico Garcia Lorca’s “The House of Bernada Alba” in 2005. Hawkins made her first notable big screen performance as “Samantha” in Mike Leigh’s film, “All Or Nothing” in 2002. Her first major TV role came in 2005 when she played “Susan Trinder” in the BAFTA-nominated BBC adaptation of Sarah Waters‘ award-winning novel, “Fingersmith.” Since then, she went on to star in another BBC adaptation, Patrick Hamilton’s “Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky.” In 2006, Hawkins returned to the theatre, appearing at the Royal Court Theatre in Jez Butterworth’s play, “The Winterling.” On the silver screen, she just finished filming a couple of movies, “Painted Veil,” a drama based on W. Somerset Maugham’s novel & “Waz,” a horror/thriller flick. We will also get to see her in Woody Allen’s yet-to-be-titled movie which is currently in production and presumably will be released sometime in 2007.

Sally loves to act but also loves writing, especially comedy. She contributed her voice & writing skills to BBC Radio 4’s sketch show, “Concrete Cow,” and loved every minute of it.

Professing a love for comedy, Hawkins worked briefly with Britain’s comic darlings - David Williams & Matt Lucas - creators of the smash hit & award-winning comedy series, “Little Britain,” appearing in 3 episodes.

Just saw the film ‘All or Nothing’ for the first time - I know it’s a bit late, it was made in 2002, but I’m often a little behind with things! Just wanted to say that I thought it was a complete masterpiece, like all Mike Leighs work. However a certain young actress really stood out for me, who I also thought was pretty gorgeous - a fantastic performance and great charisma. The face was familiar until I realised I’d seen it recently on posters for the new film Happy Go Lucky. Now I’m really intrigued. Sally you’re a a fantastic actress and just from the film I saw tonight I’m already a big fan. I’m positive you have an amazingly successful career ahead.

I think you bring a depth to your charisters that most actors do not seem to understand. In the fingersmith, even your eyes seemed to be sad in a way that words cant being to cover, and most actors if you look in there eyes they have kind of glazed over, i love seeing you on screen and think that you have a bright future ahead, hope to see you working on more films that reach the USA.

I absolutely loved your performance in Happy Go Lucky. I hope that, though you should pursue some gloomy and dour dramas in the coming years as your fabulous career expands, that you continue to showcase your tremendously cheerful and uplifting personality in a lot of your films. What a beautiful sight to behold. Good luck, and I hope that you get nominated for such an inspired performance.

    Hi Sally,

I saw HGL this night, in Martinique (French West Indies). I don’t know why they call it “Be happy” in France.

But I know you are a fantastic actress; and from now I ‘ll look ahead to watch your movies.

    I wish you the best!

    Hello Sally!
I have seen in Italy your film Happy-Go-Lucky: a pure joy for brain and heart, your performance absotulely perfect! I have a reason in addition to love this film: your face, your eyes and your physiognomy are very, very similar to face, eyes and physiognomy of my loved wife! For two hours I’ve got the pleasant impression to see my wife in your actions and in your look! Thank you very much and many compliments for your skill with best wishes for your life and career!
