Sally Goes Jane Austen!

Yes, it’s confirmed! Sally will play Anne Elliott in Jane Austen‘s “Persuasion” – a new TV adaptation for ITV. Filming is set to begin in September 2006 during the Jane Austen Festival in Bath. So those of you who’re going to Bath next month, do see if you’ll bump into the cast & crew of “Persuasion,” eh? Read on…

“Persuasion” is set to be broadcast in the UK sometime in 2007. As for those of you living on the other side of the Atlantic, we heard that it will be aired as part of the Masterpiece Theatre series at the end of 2007 in celebrating the Jane Austen Festival. FYI, Masterpiece Theatre is a PBS production. To date, we don’t have any UK or US/Canada broadcast dates yet. As soon as we hear, we’ll post it here.

In an interview with Cathy Pryor in a bar of a Covent Garden hotel last month about her latest TV performance in “Shiny Shiny Bright New Hole In My Heart,” Sally made some comments about the showbiz industry, specifically the obsession with celebrities:

“It’s insane! So irritating! Celebrity stuff on TV is completely overshadowing drama. It’s partly to do with money. I hate the obsession with money. I understand that boxes have to be ticked, but I hate that you have to fight to get an interesting or controversial piece on. Interesting stuff is pushed on to obscure late-night slots on TV. It’s all about ratings but it shouldn’t be…But I suppose I’m as guilty as the next person of buying Heat, so I’m adding to it, aren’t I? I’m horrified & fascinated all at once.”

Sally In Woody Allen’s New Movie!!

Wow! Never thought we’d see Sally in a Woody Allen movie! Bravo! She’ll co-star with 2 of Hollywood’s hottest actors, Colin Farrell & Ewan McGregor in this yet-to-be-titled movie! Imagine that! FYI, filming has begun in and around London these past few weeks. Their latest filming location has been in West London this past week. Obviously, film production won’t end for a while. So we can safely bet that the movie will only hit the theatres next year. If we get more updates about this, we’ll post it here so check back often! And oh, fyi, Sally dons a BLONDE hairdo in this movie…

According to Daily Mail, Sally‘s playing the “sweet girlfriend” of Colin Farrell‘s character in this flick. Unfortunately, we don’t know her character’s name yet.

Look Out For Sally In Theatres Near You in 2006/2007!

Looks like Sally‘s been mighty busy this year! Let’s see, she’s finished filming 2 movies co-starring with some of the well-known Hollywood actors. The movies you need to look out for that will be in theatres in the upcoming months (2006-07) are as follows:

First off, there’s “The Painted Veil,” a drama based on a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. She stars alongside some of Hollywood’s hottest actors, i.e. Naomi Watts, Edward Norton & Liev Schrieber. It’s scheduled to be released in Fall 2006. Click “Read the rest” below to find out about the premise…

The other one is called “Waz,” a serial killer flick set in New York, starring the critically-acclaimed international actor, Stellan Skarsgard & Hollywood’s Selma Blair. It’s currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released in January 2007…

For those of you who haven’t read W. Somerset Maugham‘s novel, “The Painted Veil” is a story set in the 1920′s about a woman (Naomi Watts) who, after feeling neglected by her scientist husband (Edward Norton), has an affair with a playboy (Liev Schreiber). Her husband finds out and takes her to China with him to battle cholera. From there, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery where she finds the true meaning of love and life.

Yes, it seems that Sally‘s got a knack in starring in some of the longest titles ever concocted on TV!! In 2005, she gave us “Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky.” This year, it’s “Shiny Shiny Bright New Hole In My Heart“!! Ain’t that great? She takes centre-stage this time playing a shopaholic! Yes, “Shiny Shiny…” is a cautionary tale about a wife/mother being addicted to shopping.

This engaging drama was first aired on BBC 2 on 26th July, 2006. Don’t know if BBC will re-air it so keep a look out if you missed it the 1st time around. Find out more below…

By the way, did you know that most of the dialogue in “Shiny Shiny…” was improvised? That makes the whole situation even more realistic, thus more disturbing to watch as Nathalie spirals out of control with her addiction as her condition slowly takes over her state of mind. Sally did an absolutely fantastic job in portraying the feeling of desperation and despair of a person going through an addiction. She hit it right on with the tell-all body language of an addict. It’s scary how realistic it was. This drama makes one look at the crippling effects of addiction…any addiction, doesn’t it? Makes one think twice before getting oneself hooked on something. As we should know, it’s very easy to get hooked but incredibly difficult to stop it, sometimes even fatalistic.

Sally pairs up with Steven Mackintosh in this TV drama. FYI, “Shiny Shiny…” was actually filmed in Manchester in November 2005.

Sally in New Play, “The Winterling”

Sally‘s in theatre again. This time, she’s in a new play called “The Winterling,” which is now running at the Royal Court – Jerwood Theatre, on Sloane Square, London. The Play runs from March 2, 2006 to April 8, 2006. Hurry! Get your tickets now! Tickets range from Â£15.00 – Â£25.00. Evening performances are at 7:30p Mon-Sat. Running time: approx. 2 hours 25 minutes (incl. a 15-minute interval).

“The Winterling” is compelling play written by Jez Butterworth, who brought us the award-winning “Mojo” & “The Night Heron,” and is directed by Ian Rickson, again. It has a stellar cast.

The story is about West (Robert Glenister), a middle-aged ex-gangster who has had a breakdown and finds himself in Dartmoor, in exile from his usual city environment. The plot is about what happens when Wally (Jerome Flynn), a former associate, comes to stay, and West’s former life catches up with him. The farmhouse in Dartmoor also accommodates Lue (,b>Sally Hawkins), a waif who compulsively plans the escape she seems fated never to achieve; and Wally’s stepson, Patsy (Daniel Mays).

“The Winterling” has already received rave reviews from various major news publications already. So, Sally fans, go on, check out the play already before it’s gone!

“Fingersmith” on TVOntario (Canada)

Those of you living in Canada who still haven’t seen the great production of BBC‘s mini-series, ” Fingersmith” based on Sarah Waters‘ award-winning book of the same title, you can still check out Parts 2 & 3 of it on the local channel, TVOntario (TVO). Unfortunately, the 1st part had been aired on Jan 31st already. However, Part 2 will air on Tuesday, Feb 7th at 9p & the 3rd & final part will air a week after that on Tuesday, Feb 14th at 9p, respectively. So, remember to tune in to TVO to see Sally & her equally talented cast mate, Elaine Cassidy, in great action, Canucks!

We have news for ya! Apparently, Sally starred in BBC Film Network‘s Short Film called “Sweet,” written, directed & produced by Alex Tanner. Sally plays “Philippa” in this 16-min short which is available to view on the Net! It was launched on July 29th 2005.

Synopsis:

Two bored office workers have found a satisfying way to get themselves through the working day. However, their routine is disrupted with the arrival of a new employee and when these indulgences get out of hand their true feelings are finally revealed.

Some Facts about the Cast & Crew:

We spent over Â£100 on fruit and our two leads, Sally Hawkins and David Armand, chomped their way through the lot during the two day shoot.

The idea for this film came as I was thinking about what people do to try and find meaning in their lives. I’m interested in what people fill their time with and strive for in the hope for a ‘meaningful‘ life. In this case its the work-life that our characters are trying to fulfill – with the hedonistic pusuit of pleasure taking the form of eating fruit while amassing material possesions is characterised by hoarding origami models.

What the two main characters come to realise is that these pursuits, although satisfying in the short term, are ultimately meaningless; what they do, which I find hugely exciting, is go out in search for answers…and I also love comedy…
