SALLY HAWKINS
Biography
BIRTHDATE:
Born on April 27th, 1976
Star Sign: Taurus
PROFILE:
Actress/Writer
The daughter of well-known authors & illustrators of children's books, Jacqui & Colin Hawkins, Sally Hawkins was raised in Dulwich, south-east London where she attended James Allen's Girls' School (JAGS), graduating in 1994. She then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), graduating in 1998.
RANDOM QUOTES:
(Commenting on the directors of her 2 movies, "Layer Cake" and "Vera Drake"):
"Matthew Vaughn was very caring, very attentive, which surprised me. I don't know why - I had it in my head that he'd be some sort of
lad."
"You never get used to working with Mike Leigh. I was glad to become part of his company, though, because he tends to use you again and
again. You have to be on your toes every second. This time I was improvising with Lesley Manville and Imelda Staunton, two total heroes
to me." (The Observer, 10/10/04)
ACTING CAREER:
Sally's theatre appearances include "Much Ado of Nothing" (2000), "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (2000), "Misconceptions" (2001), "Country Music" (2004) & as "Adela" in David Hare's version of Federico Garcia Lorca's "The House of Bernada Alba" in 2005. Hawkins made her first notable big screen performance as "Samantha" in Mike Leigh's film, "All Or Nothing" in 2002. Her first major TV role came in 2005 when she played "Susan Trinder" in the BAFTA-nominated BBC adaptation of Sarah Waters' award-winning novel, "Fingersmith." Since then, she went on to star in another BBC adaptation, Patrick Hamilton's "Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky." In 2006, Hawkins returned to the theatre, appearing at the Royal Court Theatre in Jez Butterworth's play, "The Winterling." On the silver screen, she just finished filming a couple of movies, "Painted Veil," a drama based on W. Somerset Maugham's novel & "Waz," a horror/thriller flick. We will also get to see her in Woody Allen's yet-to-be-titled movie which is currently in production and presumably will be released sometime in 2007.
Sally loves to act but also loves writing, especially comedy. She contributed her voice & writing skills to BBC Radio 4's sketch show, "Concrete Cow,"
and loved every minute of it.
Professing a love for comedy, Hawkins worked briefly with Britain's comic darlings - David Williams & Matt Lucas - creators of the smash hit &
award-winning comedy series, "Little Britain," appearing in 3 episodes.
