The Everglades

(Synopsis & Reviews)

Synopsis:

This TV comedy series is derived from Sally Hawkins & Siobhan Rhodes-Johnson’s creation. “The Everglades” is based on the lives of the workers & shoppers of a South London shopping mall called The Everglades, hence, the title. The viewer is able to pop in & out of each of the shops & get to know the shoppers & the folks who work there. Each week, they’re united by some kind of event, which affects all the inhabitants of The Everglades. Sally Hawkins plays a “Coffee Shop Server” who, by the way, is a guy!!

According to the show’s official website, this show is very loosely driven by a main narrative. Different characters have their own stories to tell which may occasionally overlap.

The teaser was filmed in 2004 where all the central characters of the show were played by a bunch of strong, core group of 3 or 4 female writers/performers, playing both male & female roles. The cast included Ruth Jones (“Nighty Night,” “Little Britain,” “Fat Friends“), Sally Hawkins (“Concrete Cow,” “ Little Britain” and Mike Leigh’s “All or Nothing” & “Vera Drake“), Miranda Hart (“Smack the Pony,” “At Home with Snails“), Sue Vincent (“P.O.B,” “Funland“) and Barunka O’Shaughnessy (“The Wicker Woman,” “Spaced“). Some great supporting artists included James Corden from “Teachers and Cruise of the Gods” and Barbara Keogh from “Little Britain.”

It was directed by Nick Wood whose recent credits include: “The Impressionable Jon Culshaw,” “French & Saunders,” “The Kumars at No 42,” “Goodness Gracious Me and Black Books.”

Our Reviews:

While the teaser of this series was filmed back in 2004, “The Everglades” has yet to be aired on TV. But the good news is, BBC Comedy has recently commissioned a 30-minute script of the show in April 2005 & two months later, asked the show’s executive producer, Siobhan Rhodes-Johnson, to produce a rehearsed reading of the script for the commissioners.

So, it’s only a matter of time before we’re able to watch the pilot with Sally playing a man with a funny moustache & Afro hair, serving coffee to the mall patrons on TV, eh? So, check back for our reviews after the show has finally premiered on the tube (hopefully soon)!
